Gap of curved plattforms
Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has indirectly received funding from the European Union, via the InnoBuyer Project (Grant Agreement no. 101071212). Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.
At present, the TMB metro network has nine stations with platforms built in the form of a curve. This creates a gap of more than 30 mm between the platform and the train), which exceeds 30 mm, measured vertically and 75 mm, measured horizontally.
This gap makes access to the train difficult for all users. In the case of people with reduced mobility, especially wheelchair users, this distance may effectively make it impossible for them to access the train.
This gap also creates other problems for metro users: passengers may trip, fall or suffer injuries when getting on or off the train, which in turn may also which cause delays to the arrival and departure of trains and negatively impact the efficiency and punctuality of the service.
The solution we are looking for would be applicable not only to the TMB metro network, but would also solve a problem shared by other railway operators with similar infrastructures on a global scale.
