Exhibition "Maria Canals, a contest with soul"

From March 21 to June 21 at Espai Mercè Sala

The Maria Canals International Piano Competition and TMB are celebrating together, after a long collaboration, two anniversaries that come hand in hand this 2025: the centenary of the Barcelona metro and the 70th anniversary of the musical competition.

To celebrate, the Espai Mercè Sala is hosting a commemorative exhibition of the Maria Canals competition that can be seen until June 21 in the exhibition space of the Diagonal station. The exhibition reviews all the activities and milestones achieved over time as a promoter of professional performers, as well as its educational and social work, with the aim of highlighting the vitality of the project in the present.

This photographic retrospective includes quotes and brief audiovisuals that pay tribute to the people who have been part of the trajectory of the competition, founded in 1954 by the pianist and pedagogue Maria Canals.

Two pianos at Diagonal station

In this special edition, Maria Canals brings as a novelty the installation in the metro of two pianos, one grand and one wall, which will be located on either side of the Espai Mercè Sala. These are two of the many pianos that the competition is installing in various public spaces in the city within the OFF Concurs, a set of activities that promote access to music and amateur practice.

The wall piano will be installed at the disposal of anyone who wants to play it, in a pilot test that will evaluate its permanent maintenance. The grand piano can also be played freely, in short periods of maximum half an hour, except except for concert times.
